I'm looking for literature on business re-engineering processes. Looking for something non-industry specific that would cover project initiation right through completion.

Mark, I have just completed the Implementer's edition of "The Helix Factor". It details how to conduct process improvement projects, from concept to completion. Very pragmatic and real world approach. I could make a pre-publication copy available to you. I would only ask that you provide me with your feedback. You can read about The Helix Factor at my site www.tnigroup.com. You can also read some reviews at amazon.com.
I'd be interested in reading this and supplying feedback, if you need an additional PM's opinion... Saving Changes...

Mark, I read and used the methodology in Michael's first Book - "The Helix Factor" - a quick read, did a bunch of underlining and tabbed many pages - captures the high level view of BPR and PI to get Senior Leadership buy in (turn light bulbs on) and provides ground level tools - templates and questions to propel BPR and PI efforts. His VADS - Value Added Delivery System concept hit a home run w/a stovepipe organizational I was working in and facilitated "managing between the white space" in the typical organizational chart.
Jim Champy is another BRP Guru - "Reengineering the Corporation : A Manifesto for Business Revolution."

While we are on the subject of reading material here is a list that I have found quite helpful. Don't let the topics fool you. They are related to facilitating positive change. (see attached file) Saving Changes...
The Re-engineering Handbook, by Manganelli and Kline, is a 1994 AMACOM step-by-step guide. The concepts are good, and it has some really handy methods using basic tools. Borders carried it a few years ago in the second edition published in 1996. Saving Changes...

One of the first, and heaviest, users of BPR was the U.S. Department of Defense. Much of their material has been captured at the following link:
Just finished Eliyahu Goldratt's latest book this weekend -- NECESSARY BUT NOT SUFFICIENT (North River Press). In Eli's usual "business novel" style, a la THE GOAL and CRITICAL CHAIN, it chronicles the business, the processes and the reengineering of an ERP house. It touches on the source of real change, the creation and selling of value for clients/customers, and the need to view processes and functions in a broadly holistic manner.
One of the most important lessons it highlights is that when an improvement initiative is launched, the most important question that needs to ba asked is "What can go wrong if we're successful?"
This should be second nature to a risk aware project manager, but even we tend to stop that question after the word "wrong."
