I am a new Computer Science graduate currently working as a Java developer. Although I just started working and still have a few years of experience to gain I am planning for the future already. I want to move into project management and I have been doing some research and just wanted to get an expert opinion from the MBAs and PMPs. As a part of my further education whats a good option to pursue MBA? PMP ? or doing both will do wonders for my young career ?

I agree with all comments and can summarize the following:

MBA and PMP are more and more required in job posts and can make a difference in a selective recruiting process but your knowledge, experience ,network capabilities and relationships really dictates where you can go.

MBA in IT is Good option to start with...

PMP is a very vast and different field and apply logic in all technology, finance, etc field..

I would say PMP is better option over MBA

Just to chime in, from what I have seen and experienced, an MBA is really an advanced business generalist degree, and is most valuable when combined with another specialty. In my MBA program there were many getting advanced degrees in law, accounting, finance, restaurant management, engineering, etc. plus the MBA as a side dish (universities encourage and have programs for such dual postgraduate degrees). Many of the people I went to school with already had a number of years in their career, and a path forward. The further education was just pushing them to the next level.

In the right circumstances, the PMP can have the same effect. If you are getting the PMP, you will already be on a career path (the experience requirement assures that). In some organizations, it gives you “points” on your push to the next level.
In the end, both of these can help you advance, but remember, there are a lot of MBA’s out there who are hunting for jobs (and who have a lot of student debt!).

Every situation is different, but if I were in your shoes, I would build relationships, get advanced certs within your field of expertise (Java first in your case, and then branch out), get some of the more basic project management certs, get some experience under my belt, and then decide if I wanted to invest the substantial time/money resources involved in getting an MBA, or better yet, an MBA + Masters in a related field. The good news is that if you have worked your way up in the organization by that time, you may very well be able to negotiate financial sponsorship for the next stage of your education with your company.
