I did not work in real estate industry but I trained people that belongs to that industry. What I talked with them is BAs led initiatives to put the organization an step forward than other organizations because the great competitors.

Business analysis (in the project context) as a discipline is needed anytime you need to take conceptual ideas and translate them into reality, regardless of the industry. Having dedicated BA's is a function of portfolio scale and complexity.
