I'm thinking of becoming an independent project management consultant and need establishing rates. I've got a couple contracts lined up paying 60/hr but I'm wondering if I'm low balling myself. Need your advice.

Takesha -

Depends on the role and the level of competition in your market. My suggestion would be to contact one or two reputable recruiters in your area to find out what going rates are for different types of PM roles.

Remember that domain expertise is important so the rate for a PM on a hot skill project might be higher than that for more of a "bread & butter" role.

Rami - the rates you are quoting sound higher than what I'm seeing in the Toronto area unless it is again for a hot skill project (e.g. Blockchain, machine learning). That would be for independent consulting of course - firms will bill their PMs out at much higher rates!

Kiron,

The rates I posted are not for an independent consultant. The are rate for consulting firm like ours where they charge their PM’s to the client for that much.

No question - you are then looking anywhere from $1500-$3000 a day depending on the size of the consulting firm and nature of the project. Of course, the poor PM rarely receives the bulk of that revenue!

Kiron, Rami,

It depends on your market which will determine your rate.
