Thought I would post this to see if any interesting discussion might evolve.
Typically a characteristic of retailers is the fact they have dozens or hundreds of locations where product is sold. PM's in retail therefore are commonly tasked with doing "rollout" type of work. This is managing the installation of new equipment at each site in a finite period of time. For example, maybe a new security system or new POS system is being installed at each individual site.
These types of projects have special challenges that other projects are not burdened with.
Each site installation is actually a mini-project, but the PM can be tasked with keeping on top of several dozen installations per day.
So...
a) does the group consider these types of projects to be in a unique category?
b) what software packages have people used to aid in the delivery of these projects?
c) what processes and methodologies has the group leveraged to keep these projects on track?
There are lots of ways this could go, but it is something that interests me in particular, and I would be interested in hearing other's viewpoints about it.

Using a web based project tool like OPM Creator allows you to manage multiple (unlimited) projects online. Each user logging in can only view their own projects whereas the project manager can see all projects. This is a simple way to keep all the files, tasks and discussions in one place. The system also allows for project based emails this is useful for keeping track of project discussions. OPM Creator was recently mentioned on Gantthead Click here to read the feature in full...

I realize this is an older post and may no longer be relevant however, if it isn't or if future readers come across it; I work as an Equipment Installation Project Coordinator and we use smart sheet to track similar projects. What is nice about smart sheets is that, the way we have it set up, on the Master Sheet, you get an overview of the project at a glance and you can hyperlink to another sheet specific to that project where you define your tasks. Its easily filtered so as a project completes you can filter those off of your view. It works really well for these types of projects which have various installation dates and many tasks required.
