I think this role is all about the Project Manager leadership .. PM can make PC his right hand and mutually win win or just another admin.

I believe Project Coordinator has an important role in the project and it is mainly on leadership and coordination between engineering disciplines. Project manager will be mostly involved in coordination with external stakeholders, meanwhile project coordinator is involved in coordination with internal stakeholders and technical issues.also it is very important to be expert in his/her work.

I see a project coordinator role like a backup to the project manager. They should know the PM drill and are capable of taking over the project if the need arises. They do a lot of administrative tasks for the PM to free up time for the PM to focus on the critical areas of the project. They know what is happening all the time.

The project coordinator title some times is just an excuse to water down a position title to under pay the position that is really is a PM position. I have seen a lot of project coordinator job descriptions and it basically is a PM position with a project coordinator title.

Depends on the company's standards, it's organizational project management maturity and the PM in question who is supported by the PC/PCO/PA.

I've seen some PC's who were glorified secretaries even though they had much more to offer and I've seen others who were competent PMs in their own rights and were considered full fledged partners with the Senior PM they were supporting.

As Drake indicates, a good PC can pinch hit for the PM at a moment's notice.

I agree with Kiron .
In fact we expect PC to have important role but sometimes they do not perform their duties as required.

I agree with Kiron on this.
In my experience they have an important role depending on the project complexities, and especially when PM is out on vacation.

I have seen the role as mostly adminstrative.
