Depends on the company's standards, it's organizational project management maturity and the PM in question who is supported by the PC/PCO/PA.

I've seen some PC's who were glorified secretaries even though they had much more to offer and I've seen others who were competent PMs in their own rights and were considered full fledged partners with the Senior PM they were supporting.

As Drake indicates, a good PC can pinch hit for the PM at a moment's notice.

I agree with Kiron .
In fact we expect PC to have important role but sometimes they do not perform their duties as required.

I agree with Drake. Project coordinator normally acts as deputy to project manager. A good project coordinator may take responsibility of PM. when situation arises.

On large projects, and again, I am talking construction here, the PC is a role different than the Deputy Project Manager.
