I'm trying to find information on Benefits Realization strategies/processes and associated templates. Most of the benefits I'm dealing with are intangible.

Project objective:
1. Develop and document a structured approach to Benefit Realization with the intent to operationalize for future benefit realization programs.
2. Complete a comparative analysis of expected benefits and outcomes vs realized benefits and outcomes.

Anon, I think you need to be careful in putting too much process around benefits realization - every project is different, with different anticipated results. I would rather see a process that ensures that the benefits side of the equation is considered as part of the business case / approval exercise, with custom measurement criteria / processes / etc for each initiative. It's difficult to provide more without understanding the details of your situation, but am happy to discuss if you can provide more background. Best way to do that is:

- Split the project in phases for each phase you measure the business case in what has been promised against what has been actually achieved
- For each phase make sure that the executive responsible for the business case approves the project manager to start the next one

I agree with Andy's comments. Benefit Realization is more akin to strategy and must not be explored so deeply. It will always be intangible but we must follow the SMART principle and keep the things clear, concise, simple and understandable. Yes you must be able to measure the benefits but not like you measure a feature of a deliverable.
