Does anyone know of any metrics around how large (dollars or function points) a project a single PM can manage and when it becomes necessary to split or bring on additional PM support? Saving Changes...

Good afternoon.
I look at business and IT initiatives in terms of…is it a project, a program or change request.
If the initiative is really a Program, we will assign PM’s to sub-projects of the Program. Examples would be a PM to oversee the Development, a PM to oversee the Infrastructure components, a PM to over see roll-out and training etc.
If you cannot find any metrics, perhaps a real detailed Risk Analysis/Complexity Analysis could lead you to how to staff the project.
Good luck

How much a person can handle depends on the individual. To elaborate, if I am thinking about deploying an experience project manager who has previously managed complex projects with hundreds of people versus a junior project manager who had previously handled 5 to 6 resources, the considerations would be very different. Depending on the business problem at hand and the complexity and criticality, we need to take a decision. Also, the orgnaizational policy also matters. Hope this helps! Saving Changes...
