The root of my question is in my goal not to be at the mercy of the present company when taking on a new project/program when the present one is closing. There are only limited number of attractive program just starting when you "need" one. Switching companies is painful and invites questions of motivation to stay and loyalty. These days there is little or no reward for staying in place for a long stretch: little company-sponsored training, and pensions concept long gone.
