Does anyone have any (comparative) literature on the results of projects execution WITHOUT the use of PMBOK best practices, a study on cases of success and failure.

There's no such thing as "PMBOK best practices". The PMBOK is a framework covering a myriad of practices which are all applicable in specific contexts.

If you are asking about the performance difference between projects managed using a consistent, repeatable approach and those managed in an ad hoc manner, then yes, the SEI has done it in the technology space and PMI has done it across a few different industries.

Here's one example, but many of PMI's Pulse of the Profession publications cover this type of info: https://www.pmi.org/-/media/pmi/documents/...aphic.pdf?la=en

Here's one of the ones I found related to CMMI: https://www.vizteams.com/blog/top-6-benefi...ware-companies/
