MS excel may be used for small size of projects but for big projects I believe MS project is the best tool.

It depends on the size of the project... ms project fits all in general but do you really need it for a small project.

The core tools in the MS Office suite usually show up as the most frequently used - Excel, PowerPoint and Word.

MS Project is certainly the most popular basic scheduling tool but I wouldn't necessarily call it easiest or most reliable.

But, as Sergio and Kevin indicate, you need to pick the right tool to fit the processes which have been standardized within your teams and their maturity level.
