Some of us feel we could do our boss or manager's job better than them. How about you?

"Even you, Brutus?"

I had the privilege of working with good managers in the beginning of my career but after that my experience was not so good. So, I'm sure I can be a better manager than my current or previous managers.

Sante, Well thought of Brutus, however never thought to stab him even if he is worse manager because that's not ethical and you could be in same boat one day. Also as you know many people they sit on the seat by luck so this question can be yes and No depends on how is the manager if he is a good or if he is just completely rubbish,
As far as doing the job better well once you sit on that seat then all information will come to you, new windows will open to you because you will have more access to hidden data.

I try to choose my managers wisely, I am lucky that my current functional manager is a good one.

Good managers should have good knowledge on their work plus they should have leadership skills. They should motivate us, teach us, mentor us.

Even though you have a good functional manager, you may get stuck with the bad ones at projects. That's completely demotivating. In those cases I suggest you to discuss this issue with your functional manager as early as possible before you burn out. (Lessons learned: I did the mistake, I reached to my functional manager after I burned out. )

My advice for those who are better than their managers though: Learn from them (you cannot be good at everything) and find better opportunities when you are ready.

A good manager isn't the one says he knows everything, but the one is able to divide responsabilities and tasks.

I have great managers. I would actually rather be mentored by them and learn from them than anything else.

Well!!! If my manager stand with the team in a professional way to make a collaborative team to trust each other in a cohesive one team, and work as per knowledge, standard, experience, ethical and habits. This is the best manger!!!

I am not sure if I will be comfortable with an unequivocal yes.

I would argue that there are a lot of unknowns (both known- and unknown-) and a very high risk of invoking the Dunning-Kruger effect if one were to envision oneself in their manager's position.

We would only know how competent we are in that role once we wear those shoes and walk a mile in them.
