I am currently blessed with a great manager, but I've learned from every manager I've had. Now, some of what I've learned are traits I *don't* want to emulate, but I've always learned. And I rejoice when they've given me ideas and modeled traits that I want to incorporate into my work approach!
I forget where I read it, but it is important to learn how to manage your manager. Identifying your managers' "hot buttons" and addressing them will tend to increase their confidence and trust in you, usually leading to more opportunities and freedom for you. It doesn't always work that way, but it's certainly a better course. I learned to be "on time" for the on-time-obsessive boss, for example, and it helped our work relationship tremendously,
And despite the potential accusations, I'm not referring to brown-nosing, I'm referring to respect. Even when a boss isn't doing a great job to earn your respect, they deserve some measure of it simply because they're your supervisor. And ticking off your supervisor is rarely a career-building strategy! Saving Changes...
