In our world, there some positions not existing in another companies!! What are reasons? Like senior project manger!! What is difference between project manger and senior project manger?? I know positions like if you start e.g. Junior engineer as fresh after some year experience become engineer after that senior engineer then Manager!!! I think Project manager is a top one for the project then maybe coming in the company like CEO, COO..etc.

I think you answered your own question. Projects are so common, vary so much in complexity, and involve so many levels of experience and qualifications that you can't just lump everyone into the same "project manager" title.

Well said Sante,

In addition to Sante, we need some time to add more layers to the project management team for assurance of delivery and to keep people motivated as well.

However, the complexity of the project is the main drive always and then the job description.
Recently, I applied for a highly complex project in Australia in the mining industry, the job that I applied for is a Project Coordinator which will fit me perfectly within that highly complex project.
It is all about the JOB DESCRIPTION in addition to the complexity of the project. Personally, I do not care about title anymore as long as it is a good working environment and it has a career path.

Differing factors for different organizations. Usually a combination of experience, complexity of past projects, accomplishments, strategic contributions, initiative toward professional development.

I think titles are rather subjective per company. It is all about the job description as Kevin says.

You find this position of Senior Projects Manager mostly in consulting firms as the rate per hour for a project manager is different than that of a senior one. This is a very common position here in North America.

In addition to Rami's excellent observation, the categorisation of project managers on their seniority is also used to identify which PM to assign to which projects.

PMs are assigned to medium-risk/ any-value projects or low-risk/ medium-value projects. Associate PMs are a rung down the ladder from there.

Senior PMs are assigned to high-risk or high-value (or both) projects; thereby justifying their higher rate.
