It is fairly easy for a web developer to show the websites they have developed and the technologies they have used to create it OR an app. developer to show their product, however, as a PM it is a challenge to showcase their projects, other than mentioning the size of the project, resources and risks they managed, and attempt to articulate the complexities of their projects and hope to create a visual picture in the listeners mind.

I would love to hear your thoughts and feedback on this.

Thanks!

This is similar to how does the conductor of an orchestra show what they've done?

The project's outcomes should speak for themselves and how those outcomes were achieved.

An effective PM doesn't need to toot their own horn - their team, the customer and key stakeholders will do it for them...

Totally agreed with Kiron. Success of project is really the showcase for the PM and more important is how he achieved.

In addition to this, PM can highlight the challenges which he managed and how he completed each step successfully. However, confidentiality of project (it depends) should be considered while highlighting insides.

Kiron and Amir, thanks for your replies and I agree but my question is geared towards "How do you really show" it when comparing it to a built Website or an App.

There must be a medium other than simply articulating your achieving in text format. For example,
- Reduced expenses by 25%,
- Increased revenue by 30%
- Made the process LEAN by applying LEAN principles

These could be very accurate and sincere descriptions, but there is no visual appeal to the context.

What people often miss is: they perform project mangement from the time they wake up to the time they go to bed. The level of formality is what differs when they have to apply it into their work place. All you stated above has nothing related to project management. All you stated above could be achieved because the product/service/result that the project will create. The only thing behind your accountability as project manger is to create the defined product/service/result as defined. All any other thing is about business analysis role.

Sergio, thanks for your insight. Greatly appreciated.

Here is an example to provide more clarity on the subject:
1. A web developer builds Website, he could showcase it to an interview
2. An App developer builds apps, he has that to showcase to a 3rd party

But here is the kicker:
3. A builder develops a community, uses a project manager (who hires labor to get the work done) but the credit goes to the builder for the housing project. Now how does the Project Manger "Shows or Displays" his work to a 3rd party. He has nothing to show. He can only use or articulate in a text format the following:
Project Cost: $10,000,000
Labor Supervised: 200 people
Technologies used: Waterfall and Agile (for instance)
Sure, he could take the client to the

This gets more challenging for people in our domain, where if someone asks,

Q. What do you do?
A. We manage projects.

Q. What kind of projects? A. IT projects (for e.g.)

Q. How do you do that, can you show me?
Now, how do you "Show" .....how you manage an IT project. Your manager or colleagues would know because they were present when you were managing the project but 3 years later..... you cannot "Show" you can only "Tell" and try to articulate it to the best of your ability..... specially in an interview situation and hope for the Best!

Is the same as I stated above. Project management is about activities to be performed to create the solution as defined and only as defined. Business analyst is about to define the solution.Project manger and Business analyst are roles. Because they are roles the same person could perform both roles (as many of us have made). The key is to stay clear about what each roles responsabiltiies and accountabilities.
