Many were mistaken with Sydney due to the famous Sydney Opera House
Only few told me the right answer "Canberra"

Well, the capital (resource) of Australia is the Australian Dollar.

I heard a story on how Canberra was chosen - this may be apocryphal and not historically accurate. Apparently the residents of Melbourne and Sydney were vying for their city to be the capital. They couldn't reach an agreement so they chose a city between the two of them as a compromise.

If it is true, a good lesson in conflict resolution?

The ones who got it right my be Aussies Riyadh. Yeah most answer Sydney.

But did you know the "World's most liveable city" (a designation judged by The Economist) in 2017 was Melbourne? Canada had a couple of cities in the top 5. But that isn't the amazing thing. We have won that 7 years in a row!

I think this is a common scenario that the most commercial, or well known city in a country might not be the best suited as the base for its government.

Canada is another example - while Toronto is the commercial heart of the country, has the largest population and us usually one of the top three cities identified (Montreal & Vancouver being the other two), Ottawa is our capital...

I guess some people just do not remember studying the capitals of the world. I remember it is Canberra and Canada is Ottawa.
And when I visited Melbourne I remember my friends telling me it was known for it coffee :)
