I'm curious to know how some of you either fell in to PM work or where your PM career began..

What were you doing before you became a PM or took on such a position and what fields were you working in.

Dinah Young Project Manager / Software Asset Manager| Prince William County Springfield, Va, United States
Started out in IT as a developer/analyst. Took on more and more responsibility. Suddenly found myself managing. This was something I had not planned, but when it happened, I ran with it. Took training, eventually got to the point where I could go for the PMP. And am continuing to learn and evolve.

Similar trajectory as Dinah. I positioned myself in such a way as to get more involved knowing where I ultimately wanted to get to

My trajectory is a little bit strange, I was a florist in ZĂĽrich (Switzerland) before I had to take a more managerial role in my company, so I had to learn everything from scratch. Went from 1 to 50 employees in 10 years! PM is needed everywhere :)

My background is Structural Engineering. I started in the field of engineering design, moved to projects engineering departments then found myself managing parts of large complex projects and I enjoyed doing that so I concentrated my efforts towards project management which is in a way related to my educational background too.

I worked on huge oil and gas projects. Some of those projects had 15,000 people working in them so the project was divided into subprojects and each one of us managed his own in collaboration with others (It is exactly like Scaled Scrum - Nexus). At some point I had 1,000 people to manage which was fun and hectic.

Started in Business Development in TUV NORD where I was given the chance to manage small projects and grown up from there. I always take my hat off for this great German company.

Management consultancy, all jobs are delivered as projects. Project management is essential there even if you’re not project manager by profession.

Mechanical Engineering graduate, started in downstream Oil & Gas as a junior engineer in charge of maintenance in a production unit, then moved to commissioning and startup. Then, in a 2nd life I worked on automotive mfg projects. Now in my 3rd, I don't do much PM per se, but am still trying.
