I have a MSP file where I have fixed units, and have estimated the work values, allowing duration to be calculated by MSP. As time has gone by, tasks have been completed, providing me a completion date and the actual number of hours required to perform the task. What's the proper way to enter actual values?
When I say a task is 100% complete, I want to then enter the hours required to perform the task. I then want to give the actual completion date. These actions tend to conflict with one another and it sometimes resets the bar to a milestone, sometimes resets the completion dates, etc. I'm trying to generate two pictures: what I estimated (from the baseline) and what actually occurred - but MSP is being really difficult.
Thank you in advance for providing some insight.

I believe you can use "save interim plan" if you don't want to use baseline.
Go to Tools---Tracking---Save Baseline----Save Interim Plan.
What this does is that it copies your current schedule to custom Start1/End1 fields depending on what you specify in the dialogue box. It does not copy however, the duration and work, unlike Baselines.
Hope this helps.

how do you show the estimated and actual time of the task om ms project? Saving Changes...
Really confused.... I have a very small project with a couple of resources. All of the tasks are set to automatic and fixed work. I have basedline the project. Now I begin to put in actualls. The problem that I am having is that for a single task it may have taken longer but the work did not increase. But when I put in the actual finish date the actual work increases. I would like to be able to input both the actual finish date and actual hours witout either of them changing. It would adjust the % for the resource to ballance out everything. This will enable me to compare both the projected with the actualls.
Is this possible?
Thanks in advanced. Saving Changes...

MS Project is a great scheduling tool but has many weaknesses as a pricing and/or a cost management tool. I see many people on these forums going through a great deal of pain to try to get MS Project to do something that it really wasn't designed to do. Have you considered a low cost pricing tool that will work with Project and allow you to do pricing the way it should be done? There are also cost management tools that will work with Project and are not very expensive. They would probably pay for themselves very quickly. I don't want to push any specific products on this forum but contact me if you want to know more. Saving Changes...
