Hi, Experience in the construction industry is itself an asset for you even in IT space but the nature of work you carry out in day to day operations in IT will be entitely different with that of your industry. If you have worked extensively in your field, you may work in the IT industry as a consultant who can help build IT systems and software processes that help construction companies to reduce significant human effort to design, construct, and renovate structures. Here you can make use of your Project management skills to hire, train, build and deploy construction designs/softwares. Technology can be learnt anyway.
Hope this helps...

If you have very limited IT knowledge the easiest transition path, as Gururaj indicated as well, is to join an IS development shop as a Subject Matter Expert for the user community (assuming that they produce construction related software). Also, you are certainly on the right path by joining IT specific communities of Project Managers – the “pure” project management skills are transferable but even PMI’s PMCDF v2 acknowledges the need of specialized knowledge in certain areas, and IT/IS is for sure one of those domains. Moreover, to shorten the ramp-up I would suggest to take one of the introductory classes usually offered by local colleges or universities as part of ‘continuing education’ programs (evenings or afternoons). It will certainly help a lot at the interview if you can show the employer that you have a general understanding of software industry. Saving Changes...
