STUDYING THE PMBOK

I would like to know how some of you attacked studying the PMBOK whether for the PMP or the CAPM.

As I am taking a course which includes mainly video, it has suggested that chapters 4-13 will be on the CAPM exam. I will be utilizing section talks from the video lecture along with self study directly from the guidebook.

It's been awhile since I have had to study in such a matter, so curious as to what is effective to prepare me to be able to take this exam within the next few months.

Thanks in advance.

PMBOK does nothing in terms of exam prep.

Use the exam content outline -- it actually explains what topics and tasks will be on the exam.

PMBOK "solely" doesn't help in passing the exams.
One might be thinking about using such a good reference material that he/she wouldn't need to open the PMBOK itself. But isn't it true that every training material has to refer back to PMBOK figures and charts many times?

So it means that you can use PMBOK AND reference material complementing each other for better understanding of the concepts as well as to pass the exam.

So far so good with my studies. I'm doing well with the section quizes and games that are provided. I have Ritas CAPM prep book on the way and arrives Tuesday. Looking forward to that.

From what I see it's all about understanding concepts and relating it to real world situations in the first person POV.

I'm working through a great distance course on Udemy.com by Joseph Phillips which has a really well laid out approach to reviewing the content! It's even up to date on PMBOK version 6.

As you read the PMBOK 6, whenever you see 'Described in Section #.#.#.#...' take a moment to jump forward or back to reference it and relate it to the topic you are currently on.
The PMBOK is laid out sequentially and systematically, but the processes are very interconnected.

In all processes, take a close look at the inputs and ask why (always ask yourself)- Why is it an input? Understanding the why's will help with comprehension of the process itself.

One of the things that helped me the most was learning the chart of knowledge areas and processes. I created a blank chart and every day I filled in the chart. That helped me learn the chart a lot more than just memorizing it. The inputs/tools, techniques/outputs are heavy on the CAPM exam. I would definitely study the ITTOs and the chart.

I'm currently studying for the CAPM based on PMBOK 5 btw - I assume since version 6 is fairly new, this is still available and acceptable - yes?

What are the updates in version 6 focusing on? Is it a significant change?

I understand that version six has a few more processes and two of the knowledge areas have been renamed. I would try to get my hands on version 6 of the PMBOK guide if I were you.

I will have to look in to that. I just updated and bought another course with Udemy based on the PMBOK v6. It's the CAMP Prep Seminar, PMBOK Guide Sixth Edition.

Hopefully this course will give me what I need. I guess for the time being I will still utilize PMBOK 5 and Rita's CAPM third edition exam prep book.

Didn't know CAPM was updating so soon. Looks like after May the exam will be based on v. 6
