Topic area numbers, what do they actually mean?

On the right side of our profile influence number, you will find topic areas and an associated number. What do these mean, what value do they bring, and more importantly, is the algorithm even more confusing (and unreliable) as the influence algorithm?

Since I joined this site, I (and many others) have "Talent Management" and "Career Development" as the top three skills/knowledge areas. Seriously?

I have the same top two items. At first I thought it had something to do with the articles I was reading. But they have not really changed and I now have no idea.

It says "Influence is also recognized in Practice Areas. If you are contributing valuable content in a particular practice that is influencing the discussion in the ProjectManagement.com community, your Practice Influence score will be ..." followed by a table. I still do not understand. I am not contributing content about Talent Management or Career Development.

That's what I mean. It's a big "huh" factor. They should do away with it or clearly explain how it is created so we can all do something about getting rid of topics from our profile that could mean very little to us or are clearly not the top topics we are involved in here.

Many of us have these top two items, as if we work in HR or something. I've written over 20 blog articles on Scrum, yet it appears nowhere in the list.

I have also the same top two. I had the same question and really I wonder how far the algorithm works and dig in deep.

I think a PhD in algorithms wouldn't make any sense of it either.

Do you think it has something to do with PMChallenge questions? I was trying to look at some other profiles. If they have not answered any questions those numbers do not appear.

I don't think so, as the PM challenge questions focus on other areas way more than these obscure topics. I can't recall any PM challenge question on Talent Management or Career Development ;-)
