Topic area numbers, what do they actually mean?

On the right side of our profile influence number, you will find topic areas and an associated number. What do these mean, what value do they bring, and more importantly, is the algorithm even more confusing (and unreliable) as the influence algorithm?

Since I joined this site, I (and many others) have "Talent Management" and "Career Development" as the top three skills/knowledge areas. Seriously?

Vincent, not everyone has those as the top two, so I doubt if it's related to no topics. Yes I saw some articles and also the web conference you mentioned has them included, but the majority of what I view (and I suspect most people) is not related to these two topic areas.

As an example, just look at all the blog articles. Only 1 blog article in the most recent list has just 1 of these topics.

Sante:

This shows your influence per area. If you click on it, it will take you to a more descriptive table that lists most of the areas and shows your influence in them. The algorithim there depends on how much you contribute each area comapred to others. For example: If you comment on articles and b,ogs tagged with Talent Management then this counts there and the same for your blogs too. Depends how you tag them.

My top 3 are different. At some point, I was 95 in Construction but dropped significantly although I do not really see much input from others in that area but you never know why.

Yes Rami, that's my point, I have been tracking this for some time, and those two topics are nowhere close to the top topics areas I have viewed, commented etc.

My guess is it's a time-bound calculation of contributions to posts where the author has pre-selected the topic area.

The algorithm might look at votes received in answers for discussions, comments on blog posts, ratings on posts and downloads, etc.

This is just conjecture, though. I don't have any evidence to back this point of view up.

Possibly Karan, but as I said I have been tracking my usage, comments, voting etc and there is no correlation that I can see that would explain these two categories being in the top two.

Those come from how the articles, discussions, etc. contributed to are labeled.

Strategy, Agile Practices & Talent Management are my top three. I totally see the 2nd & 3rd based on my blogs and responses to questions, but am confused by how they determined the #1 topic!

I am curious about that as well, It mentions if you contribute regarding the various areas. I am assuming it is watching what questions you respond to
