Topic area numbers, what do they actually mean?

On the right side of our profile influence number, you will find topic areas and an associated number. What do these mean, what value do they bring, and more importantly, is the algorithm even more confusing (and unreliable) as the influence algorithm?

Since I joined this site, I (and many others) have "Talent Management" and "Career Development" as the top three skills/knowledge areas. Seriously?
