Dear all,
acc. to your experience do you see a direct promotion from Project Manager to a Plant Manager possible/feasible despite a lack of staff full responsibility experience within a composite organization? Or an experience as functional Manager is a must-have?
Thank you upfront for your contribution.
Regards,
Youssef

Nothing is impossible. However, project skills do not directly relate to skills for program/process management that is ongoing. It is possible to run a project without deep knowledge of the business. I would think that the Plant Manager would have a very strong knowledge of the business as well as day-to-day operations within the plant itself. This is often referred to as BAU, Business As Usual, in contrast to project work and problem resolution.

Unfortunately, it happens in many countries. however, nothing is impossible and could turn positive.
I learned an Arabic proverb in the past says; Everything for the Arabs is Potato.

In this case, if your boss thinks that you can fit for it and you feel yourself somehow you can make manage go for it. I think it is a positive sign of Trust

So you reconfirm that a functional Manager will be more eligible for such position due to a experience fullfilment of Leadership with staff responsibility. In contrast, the project Manager does have usually a Leadership experience without staff responsibility. Thanks,

Youssef, please let me go to the basic. Is you ask me, a functional manager will be more elegible? I will answer: yes. But it is a "cold" answer. Project manager in the "best" case of the world is focusing on activities. Managing a plant is on top of focus on activities. The focus is take into account functions/process that will help the plant to interact with the environment. Just as a mean to put an example to clarify what I am saying here comes a link about an article I wrote time ago and was published by the PMI and the IIBA and it is about all you could take into account each time an organization needs to solve a business problem. Hope it helps to exemplify my pint:
