Acceptable Terminology

Every profession has their own terminology that will facilitate understanding, exchange of information, and effective/cross-border communication. Commonly used terminology of a discipline may be defined by its professional governing institution, an authority, or the standards body. These may include a standardized glossary of terms for the vocation, and also publicly used terms which can be different and unique to practitioners at different localities.

Acceptable terminology is generally defined in writing e.g. on the preamble or addendum of a document, or as clarified verbally e.g. at the beginning of a presentation. In conversations, explain first frequent-use of non-standard terms then ask or reflect for clarification when in doubt of the terminology used. In publications, examine the context or background of the publisher/author for clarity e.g. a local news report or article.

A couple of examples which can cause confusion ~

  • Work-hours defined as the duration of work and not the effort of work. E.g. 9 work-hours from 8:30am to 5:30pm.
  • Man-hours defined as the effort of work (in Asia in particular where patriarchal practices are prevalent). E.g. 24 man-hours in 3 days with 1 worker, or 24 man-hours in 1 day with 3 workers.
  • Man-hours are viewed as discriminatory in certain cultures. Thus, work-hours are used instead.
