Writing about “real-world project management” is a challenge. My world isn’t the same as your world. If I tell you all about how project management helps me make contingency plans for dealing with the poorly stocked shelves of the local grocery store, you might find that (vaguely) interesting—but you won’t necessarily find it applicable to your own reality.
But there is a universal truth: Project management changes how we approach life. I don’t mean that to be a philosophical or spiritual statement, just a practical one. Project management skills allow us to be more independent, more willing to embrace uncertainty, and perhaps even more adventurous. Let’s look at some examples.
“I’ll plan that myself…”
Growing up in the UK in the days before widespread access to the internet, one of the things that I used to enjoy doing as a young adult was planning my summer vacation. In those days, that involved going to the travel agent and picking up a bunch of different brochures for tours, hotel packages, etc. and choosing what appealed the most.
I used to hate the fact that most of the brochure content was “package holidays”: pre-bundled combinations of dates, flights, hotels, and excursions for a set (usually slightly discounted) price. The appeal for the holidaymaker was that it was less effort, …
