Between the first (December 2023-January 2024) and second (March-April 2024) waves of PMI's Generative AI in Project Management Survey, the number of project professionals using generative AI (GenAI) for more than half their projects surged from 20% to 37%. This rapid increase reflects how professionals are actively embracing and experimenting with GenAI to transform their work approaches, while organizations develop frameworks for broader implementation.

A recent ProjectManagement.com webinar featuring PMI Thought Leadership Content Specialist Rupal Bhandari and Director of Thought Leadership Edivandro Conforto focused on this development. Drawing from PMI's latest report "Pushing the Limits: Transforming Project Management with Generative AI Innovation," they explored how professionals are leading the charge in GenAI adoption, often outpacing their organizations' formal support structures.

The webinar highlighted an important tension: While practitioners are rapidly discovering innovative ways to leverage GenAI for everything from risk assessment to stakeholder communications, many organizations are still working to establish governance frameworks and support systems for enterprise-wide adoption. This gap between individual innovation and organizational readiness is creating both challenges and opportunities.
