3 Trends Shaping Project Management
This past year has been a transformative one in project management. It was full of innovation, changing work environments, and a renewed focus on value creation rather than on simple project delivery.
Organizations continue to navigate challenges and opportunities, including advances in technology, the impact of the distributed workforce that looks to be a permanent situation, and shifting priorities and definitions of success. Project managers are in the middle, driving strategic outcomes while also paying close attention to operational deliveries.
One of the defining trends for the year—and one that looks to continue into the years beyond—is the impact of artificial intelligence and automation on projects and project managers. AI looks to change the way that projects are planned, prioritized, executed and monitored, through the entire lifecycle of a project. Tools surfaced that helped with repetitive tasks, provided insight, and helped support better decision-making.
While this was happening, the shift to remote and hybrid work brought both prospects and difficulties, changing the way teams collaborated, delivered, and simply existed together. Project managers had to redefine leadership, fostering connections and building trust across multiple time zones and distances—making frequent in-person meetings impractical.
