Stepping into a project management role for the first time can be both exciting and daunting. Every new project leader faces unique challenges, but some struggles are more common than others. To better understand these, a poll I conducted on ProjectManagement.com asked project leaders:

"What was your biggest challenge in your first PM role?"

The results (as of this writing), combined with comments from seasoned professionals, offer invaluable insights for aspiring and newly minted project managers.

Key Findings from the Poll

1. Communication and Stakeholder Management (68 votes)
By far, the most significant challenge identified was communication and stakeholder management. Participants noted the importance of understanding who the relevant stakeholders are, aligning their expectations, and managing their influence.

• One respondent shared that connecting software vendors directly with end users helped align project deliverables with user needs, resulting in a better final product.
• Others emphasized that face-to-face meetings were more effective than email chains for building stronger relationships.
• Some highlighted the unpredictability of human behavior, which adds complexity to stakeholder management.
