What if your PMO could do more than report status? What if it could actually guide direction—like a GPS for your project portfolio?

For decades, the project management office has been the custodian of dashboards: tracking milestones, budgets and risks. These have served organizations well in a world where stability and process compliance were key. But that world is disappearing fast.

As we know, we are now operating in the Project Economy—where value is no longer created through operations, but through transformation. Projects are the engines of strategy. Execution is the competitive edge. And yet, many PMOs still operate with rear-view mirrors—excellent at telling you what just happened, but blind to where you’re going next.

The result? More leaders bypass the PMO.

They turn to agile tribes, transformation hubs, or consultants who can move faster. I’ve personally started experimenting with AI tools that replicate core PMO tasks—tracking progress, flagging risks, drafting updates, coordinating actions.

These tools are fast, always on, and improving rapidly. In some of my own projects, they are already outperforming manual PMO setups.
