I’ve worked long and hard to get the experience, take the classes, and pass the PMP certification exam. Now I’m concerned that artificial intelligence may be able to automate things and do my job for me. Should I worry that within the next few years my organization will no longer need me since it appears that it all can be done by computers that are faster and smarter than I am?

A. You have been smart to be following what is happening in the AI world. Computers can now process project work faster and with more accuracy than any human could hope to do. So, it would be foolish for organizations to continue to waste their money on human project managers. Look to switch careers to a more hands-on profession like healthcare or manufacturing.

B. Don’t worry. While there will be electronic ways to do things that you do currently in a way that’s faster and less likely to make errors, human project managers will still be very necessary. But your responsibilities will change…for the better. Instead of lots of routine work on the computer, you can spend your time on leadership, negotiation, and evaluating project work.

C. The impact of AI goes far beyond impacting what you do to monitor and speed up project work…
