8 PM Lessons I've Relearned From Artificial Intelligence

A few years ago, I wrote an article about the importance of having at least a little technical knowledge as a project manager. The response surprised me—it resonated with a lot of PMs, particularly those managing delivery, who felt the same way.
I have been thinking about that article recently because the world it described has shifted considerably. The argument I made then—that understanding HTML, MVC patterns or SQL queries makes you a better PM—still holds. But there is a new layer on top of it now, and I think it is worth talking about.
That layer is artificial intelligence.
Not AI in the abstract, boardroom sense. I mean the practical, day-to-day AI tools that are already sitting inside your project management platforms, your IDEs, your monitoring dashboards. The PMs who know how to work with these tools are delivering differently—and better—than those who do not. Here is what I have observed, mapped directly to the eight points I made back in 2019.
1. Prioritize and plan better. In 2019, my example was a developer explaining why removing white spaces causes alignment issues—and how knowing that helps you plan more realistically.
The same principle applies today, but the conversation has a new participant. AI-assisted estimation tools can now flag that a simple task carries high complexity based on similar historical work.…
