Experience Decides: The PM’s Role in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence is becoming part of everyday project management. We use it for analysis, reporting, risk identification, documentation and even decision support. Tools are evolving quickly, and as project managers we are expected to use them to increase efficiency and productivity.

After working with AI in real projects, however, I realized something important. AI is powerful, but it only works as well as the experience of the person using it. Even with advanced tools, the role of the project manager remains essential to interpret context, make decisions, and generate value.

This article shares my experience using AI in project environments and why, even with advanced tools, experience and judgment remain critical to achieving the right results.

AI and the GPS Analogy

The best way I have found to explain the role of AI in project management is through a simple analogy. Imagine that AI works like a GPS that the project manager uses to reach a destination.

The GPS calculates the route, suggests the fastest option, and warns about traffic or delays. But the driver decides where to go, when to stop, and whether the suggested route makes sense. If you know the road, you may choose a different path. You may adjust the route in real time, take a shortcut, or avoid a situation that the GPS cannot see.
