Is Your AI Risk Management Working?
It seems ridiculous to suggest that AI is now a core part of project delivery; it’s still so new. But the rate of adoption and growth has been so significant that we really are at that point, at least in a significant number of organizations.
And one of the major areas of focus for AI in projects is risk. Sometimes that’s just coming up with a list of potential risks, sometimes it’s AI agents acting as managers of all project risks. Frequently, it’s somewhere in between those two extremes.
The arguments for having AI handle some or all of the risk element of a project are generally centered around efficiency—it’s better for people to focus on other work and allow AI to handle aspects of risk.
That makes sense, but only if AI is also effective—at least as effective as people. Otherwise, it can cause a lot more problems than any gain that is achieved.
Some would argue that being as effective as human risk management is a low bar; we have all seen scenarios where any risk work was an afterthought, and where it was frequently ignored as other project commitments increased.
But that’s not really the standard that we should be pursuing! I’ve spoken with a few organizations to get their sense of how AI is assisting in risk management, and I want to share their thoughts here.
