An Article About...a Watermark
If you had told me a little while ago that I would be writing an article about a watermark, I would have thought that you were crazy. (I’m also pretty sure that the editor would have thought it crazy as well.) But here we are, and if you are reading this, then not only did I write it, the editor let it through!
Why watermarks? Well, AI company Anthropic has just announced that its AI engine, Claude, will embed invisible watermarks into all of the content that it generates, starting with instances of Claude in use in Europe. In fact, it’s already doing it.
It’s partly to comply with the European Union’s (EU’s) AI Act. But regardless of why it’s being done, it is a very good thing—especially when combined with Anthropic’s statement that they are going to help users and third parties to identify these watermarks.
You have to imagine that the other major AI engines are going to do something similar—and likely globally eventually, not just in a particular region. I also imagine that other jurisdictions will be monitoring what happens in the EU as they look to develop their own legal and regulatory frameworks for AI.
This watermark will clearly identify any content that was generated with the help of the Claude tool, and Anthropic says that it will persist even when that content is copied and pasted elsewhere. That
