Careers rarely unfold exactly according to plan.
As project managers, we understand this reality well in our professional work. Every project carries uncertainty, constraints, dependencies and risk. Yet many professionals approach their careers with far less structure and intentionality than they would a project they are assigned to lead.
Many professionals spend significant time developing career goals, updating resumes, pursuing certifications and networking strategically. Those are important activities. However, planning a career without actively managing risk is similar to launching a project without a risk management plan. Eventually, uncertainty will test the strength of the strategy.
In project management, even the most carefully developed project plan can fail without identifying threats, assessing impacts and preparing mitigation strategies. The same is true for careers.
Throughout my career, from leading public-sector and infrastructure initiatives to pursuing graduate education, earning my PMP® certification, writing articles, mentoring professionals, and participating in industry conversations, I’ve learned that sustainable career growth is not simply about having a plan. It is about proactively managing uncertainty while remaining aligned with purpose, fulfillment and long-term impact.
