Does Your Company Truly Embrace New Ways of Working?
I hear a lot from organizations about how they want to find new ways of working, embrace different methods and approaches, and seek out new ways of delivering successful projects. That sounds like a good idea to me. They often point to things like hybrid as evidence that they are making progress on that score…but let’s think about that for a second.
Almost everyone is doing hybrid, so that’s not really proving anything. And what would you expect these organizations to say? None of them are going to tell us that they are looking to deliver every project the same way, that every PM is expected to follow identical steps in an identical manner, completing identical templates. This isn’t 1992 anymore.
But every once in a while, I come across an organization that really does want to diversify. I want to tell you about one company (a client of mine) that really thought outside of the box and is enjoying the benefits of taking that risk.
Hire different
This is a fairly large company, and they have more than 50 project managers. That gives them a lot more flexibility in their hiring and allows them to experiment a little. They are a software development company that produces specialist applications for commercial clients. As a result, most of their projects are technology based, and virtually all of their PMs have a background in managing software
