Book Review: Practice What You Preach: What Managers Must Do To Create A High Achievement Culture

Last year, a book titled Practice What You Preach: What Managers Must Do To Create A High Achievement Culture was released. The author is David H. Maister, a former Harvard Business School professor and best-selling author. In the book, he reveals what an effective manager must believe, be and do to create financial success. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in Customer Relationship Management. Although the book is not focused specifically on CRM, Maister explains--in a very uncomplicated way--how you can develop the corporate culture that is necessary for a successful CRM program.

Maister developed his conclusions from the results of his worldwide survey of more than 5,500 people from 139 offices of 29 companies in 15 countries. Strikingly, he found that most managers spend a great deal more time developing strategies and processes than energizing and coaching their employees. Maister's principal observation is that, "All the strategy, systems and processes an office may have in place does not impact employee attitudes anywhere near as much as do managers do." Further, the survey showed that employee attitudes have a very direct and substantial impact on profitability.

At the heart of the survey is the conclusion that strong financial performance results from high quality work and strong client relationships. That, of course, is also the heart of CRM. These…
