Setting Up a PMO--A Million-Dollar Question?
Recently gantthead member Richard Marra posted a question regarding setting up a PMO. I posted a kind of general, high-level answer that I wasn't completely satisfied with. Dan Shatto asked the question again looking for a step-by-step, "PMO for dummies" answer. Finally, Stuart Penning posted an answer saying that the question is a million dollar one and although he has successfully set up a PMO three times, he is not sure he is willing to share the information.
I don't know if the answer is worth a million bucks. In some cases, a well executed PMO might be worth that much or more. I think the idea of how to set up a PMO is so dependent on excellent execution that by itself it is worth somewhat less than a million. I'm pretty sure Stuart worked very hard to make his concepts work.
With that background, I thought it would be a good idea to take a crack at addressing the step-by-step question in an article rather than another lengthy post. If you want to comment on the value (or lack thereof) of this approach, please post to the thread running now in my department. The steps I've set out are grouped according to how I think about them, influenced by my experience at KPMG, Cap Gemini and Logica.
