I've been asked by many people about getting started in project portfolio management. While there is a lot of interest in using PPM to manage corporate efforts at a high level, there is a dearth of information on how to get started.No problem! Today, we present the Project Portfolio Management Starter Kit. This kit consists of a PowerPoint briefing explaining the initial steps and an Excel worksheet to perform your analysis. With these two tools, you will have the ability to start your portfolio process.
Once you've downloaded the kit, simply follow the steps in the briefing to organize your portfolio. However, for those of you who, like me, sometimes ignore the instructions and dive right in, here is the overview of what you should do.
Step 1: Define the PortfolioFirst, establish the overall portfolio mission. This mission statement will be used to initially determine what projects are in or out of the portfolio. The mission statement can be simple, like: The Intranet Portfolio covers all projects to be deployed on the corporate intranet.
Step 2: Gather the Projects
Now, gather all the projects together that you think might be in the portfolio. This may not be the list you already have. Some projects, including duplicate efforts, may be underway in other parts of the organization. Use the worksheet to create the list of projects. The worksheet
