"May you live in interesting times."

Curse or blessing? Promise or threat? Whatever your perspective, you certainly have to agree that the year 2002 has been an interesting one.

But did we learn anything from all that tumult*? From Wall Street to Main Street to your particular row of cubicles, did we take the time to step back and think--like the boy eagerly diving into the large pile of horse manure on Christmas morning--"There's got to be a pony in there somewhere," and dig out the hard-won lessons learned, those nuggets of insight and wisdom that will help us avoid making the same mistakes all over again?

Or did we just flush it all down our new, high-powered pressure-assisted crapper* and move on to new business (no pun intended)?

Unfortunately, most of us are prone to do the latter. And that can be very costly, because some of those lessons can be once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. Learn it now, or lose your life (literally or figuratively) when you repeat the mistake.
