Getting Along With Co-Workers Could Be the Secret to Success
A wise man once told me, It's not what you know, it's how you are thought of that determines your success in a company. For the most part, I have found that bit of advice accurate and true. When I gave orientations to new staffers in my IT group, I used to give them the following formula:- 20% of your success will be based on your technical ability.
- 50% of your success will be based on how well you get along with others in the organization.
- 20% of your success will be based on your ability to demonstrate you care.
- 10% of your success will be based on intangibles.
How the eyes would roll. Imagine telling a bunch of IT techies that only 20 percent of their success was based on their technical skills. I mean, how do you a roomful of people who think their technical skills should account for 120 percent of their success that they are 100 percent off.
In my 25 years of experience, I have found that management considers your technical skills to be the price of admission into the job. So from that day forward it is only the lack of those skills that can hurt you. Think about it: How many people have you seen succeed to amazing heights in an organization because they are technical wizards? Now, how many have succeeded because they are thought highly of and liked?
