Lessons From the Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire (Part 12)
It has been a long ride, with many lessons along the way. During this journey, we have explored the underlying principles and strengths of the great Roman Empire, as well as its weaknesses. We have taken a high-level tour of the entire history of ancient Rome, from monarchy to republic to empire, and finally to its ultimate demise. We have examined the causes of its rise, and the reasons for its fall. Finally we have applied these lessons to modern day project management.
So that you may easily and quickly reference these lessons when applying them to your projects, I will list them below. Let us not forget these valuable lessons from the rise and fall of the Roman Empire:
Be sure to document lessons learned throughout your project, while things are fresh in your mind.
At the end of your project, finalize them in a useful summary format geared toward its intended target audience, not buried in issues lists and change logs. Better yet, keep a database updated with lessons learned by category. We are only able to learn from the Romans because so much is heavily documented. This learning can be made even easier through concise summarization, packaged with a specific purpose or audience in mind.
Make sure to document the business need, tied to a corporate or departmental objective, as part of the scope statement.
