Discontent Over Content

Mike Donoghue is a member of a multinational information technology corporation where he collaborates on the communications guidelines and customer relationship strategies affecting the interactions with internal and external clients. He has analyzed, defined, designed and overseen processes for various engagements including product usability and customer satisfaction, best practice enterprise standardization, relationship/branding structures, and distribution effectiveness and direction. It was a perfectly normal day and there I was--in a reception area looking at a magazine cover and realizing there was a topic inside the periodical that I actually wanted to read. Not familiar with the publication, I began negotiating my way through the first few pages in order to unearth the elusive table of contents so I could locate my intellectual prey.
 
I have to admit I enjoy ads, so I indulged myself in a little more than casual scanning of the visual fare as I proceeded to my destination. A high-end product, the magazine sported a number of pictures and spreads that would appeal to many big-budget, second-estate readers. Expensive and difficult to produce, I grudgingly admired the techniques as well as the budgets that were employed to get my attention.
 
Lost in Space
Where was that table of contents now? Like many magazines you've probably experienced, this one adopted the old "make you flip back and forth" practice--you know, the one where they only make the page numbers appear once every 15 pages or so in order to force you to look at peripheral information (I have no doubt that some marketing hotshot has a name for it).
 
Thinking the TOC would be in the first 10 to 20 pages, I returned once again to the cover and then methodically reviewed and counted the pages going forward to make sure I didn't miss it. Unfamiliar with how the publishers displayed …
