There are many types of “outsourcing” with one thing in common: they give the unprepared project manager fits. Some types of outsourcing that project managers must confront to be successful are:
  • Outsourcing work to another company that specializes in the function
  • Outsourcing a function to an offshore workforce
  • Outsourcing work to a “new” company that was actually spun off from the original
As outsourcing has become more common in recent years, lessons learned have been captured and reported. It is now more clear how to anticipate and avoid common difficulties. Perhaps we can even achieve the benefits of outsourcing envisioned by our organizational leaders! Okay, maybe that last one will have to wait…but we can at least plan to steer clear of real problems you will encounter.
 
The general rule to follow is to set up an “All for One” environment to counter the “Us vs. Them” mentality that seems to form naturally between your in-house project workforce and the outsourced group. The “Us vs. Them” mentality forms when there are different definitions of success exacerbated by inadequate communication.
