Guye Fawxes, the project manager at Go-Ahead Widget King, Inc. (GAWKI), was getting ready for the monthly review meeting of his project with upper management. One of the topics for discussion this month was going to be the recent implementation of Project Portfolio Management. Developing an impressive presentation to report his experience of implementing PPM was top on Fawkes’ mind when he sat down to prepare for the meeting.
During the last decade, GAWKI grew to be a powerhouse in the Widget world and its enlarged operations demanded a variety of applications and systems based upon various technologies. An increased number of IT projects created the problems of alignment of projects, people and budget with corporate objectives. The decision making slowed down, and the upper management found it difficult to get a big picture of all IT initiatives. The solution was to implement PPM at GAWKI. This was done few months back, and now was the time to evaluate that decision.
Balanced Resource Utilization
One of the pet peeves of Fawxes and other project managers at GAWKI was the lack of resources. Either their projects’ resource needs were not properly understood, or other organizations or projects were stealing resources from them. Many times the reason for this was that there were too many projects, and they were not prioritized.
