During these times a person’s workday consists of never-ending meetings and countless one-on-ones with different teams. These efforts are done in order to ensure communication flows and dependencies are called out between various project teams.
 
Add in the concept of project portfolio management (PPM) and at first glance it may seem like there is just one more meeting being added to the plates of everyone’s already packed schedule.
 
An article, “Project Portfolio Management is Your Friend” outlines three key concepts to embrace PPM. These concepts are realism, rationality, and visibility. 
  • Realism addresses how PPM brings clarity to an organization’s planning processes
  • Rationality is summed up as the allocations of resources, both human and financial
  • Visibility highlights how PPM can bring visibility to project work and people
PPM could also be defined as the next evolution of broader project management practices utilized in order to maximize a company’s financial investments across the entire organization, both business and IT. This would also imply that in order for PPM to be successful within a business organization, well-defined project management practices need to be in place and utilized on projects.
