Quality is something that differentiates products and services. The notion of better, which is a relative term, plays a significant part in the success of products, hence manufacturers and service providers try to produce higher quality products and services.
Concept of Quality
However, the concept of quality in the manufacturing world has evolved over time. The first concept is the “fitness to standard” or the “conformance to the specifications”, where the quality is checked by comparison between the output and the specifications.
The second one is based upon the “fitness of use” or the “conformance to the expected use”. Here the product is of good quality if it performs as expected and not as specified. The third concept uses the “fitness of cost” or the “conformance to the expected use and to the expected price” test. Not only does the product perform as expected, but it is also produced at low or reasonable cost. The fourth one uses the “fitness to latent requirement” or the “conformance to the unexpected needs” test. Here the quality is in the eye of the users or customers and low cost.
