SWAT Teams: Leading From the Front (Part 1)
You can leave your fatigues at home. And no, there will be no risk to life or limb (at least we hope!). Welcome to the world of IT SWAT teams--a tactic being increasingly used as a formal process to respond to mission-critical projects and situations.
SWAT teams have their origin in the police/paramilitary. The focus of SWAT teams is on resolving dangerous situations, using powerful “tools” while the officers themselves often risk life or limb. This article examines the issue of SWAT teams in the technology space. It examines some common characteristics of “IT SWAT teams” and lists some ideas for your next SWAT assignment.
IT SWAT teams refers to special purpose teams that are created for responding to/resolving a business-critical problem that cannot be and/or has not been resolved through the use of “standard operating procedures”.
SWAT teams are typically formed for two types of situations:
1. Planned SWAT Exercises
Project Management Offices/the leadership team may decide to execute certain projects (that introduce significant change) through SWAT teams due to the distinct advantages they bring over traditional project execution.
